Selvage refers to the self-finished lengthwise edge of a cut of woven material.
Why use the edges?
Its our goal to impact the environment in this small way, empowering you to make the edge a responsible place to be.
The standard production process begins with a sketch of the desired design, a pattern to achieve this design, and then an efficient pattern layout (without modifying the shape of the pattern pieces). Despite efficient layouts, standard production generates an average of 15% textile waste. In zero-waste production methods, 99% of the textile material is used. The pattern pieces have been strategically developed to intentionally not produce waste. The easiest way to see this difference in our chalk bags is to flip them upside down. Unlike the round industry standard, the base of our bags is square. The edges of each piece during cutting also cut the edges of the adjacent piece, leaving no scraps as waste.
